OFERTA EMPLEO: Postdoc modelización cultivo-suelo

Science and Technology, Aarhus University Foulum, is looking for dedicated candidates for a three-year Postdoctoral position at the Department of Agroecology starting on August 15, 2017.

Research area  The postdoc study will involve use of crop-soil models for studying impacts of climate change on agricultural crops and cropping systems under climate change with particular emphasis on adaptation to climate change and implication for the soil carbon balance. This will involve parameterisation and testing of both dynamical and statistical models to describe the effects of crop and soil management and climate change on crop yield and carbon flows and stocks. Particular emphasis will be given to the assessment of how crops can be adapted to tolerate changes in extreme events and how cropping systems can be modified to enhance soil carbon stocks.    The Postdoc is also expected to participate in the day-to-day supervision of graduate students within the area of crop and soil carbon modelling and climate change, including teaching at PhD courses.

Required qualifications  We seek a committed person who preferably possess the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Agroecosystems Modelling or similar aspects
  • Experience with use and parameterisation of dynamic simulation models
  • Experience with handling large datasets and statistical analyses of experimental and monitoring data
  • Experience with scenario analyses, preferably involving climate change
  • Good publishing and networking skills
  • The ability to develop research objectives, conceptualize and create hypotheses
  • Willingness to collaborate with others as part of a multi-disciplinary research team
  • Feel comfortable with working independently
  • A proven record of research publications in peer-reviewed international journals

You must have an enthusiastic personality and possess good communication skills. Furthermore, we are looking for a responsible and social person who can support and contribute to a good working environment.

This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. Postdoc position in process-based modelling of plant-plant and plant-environment interactions

Food security and sustainable use of resources are central to the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals by 2030. Improved management of agroecosystems and available resources will be necessary to meet these challenging goals. Among management practices, increasing the diversity of crop systems has been suggested as a way to enhance productivity, increase resource use efficiency and resilience to environmental fluctuations, and decrease the frequency of pests and disease outbreaks. To exploit in full this possibility, it is necessary to determine the mechanisms promoting positive plant-plant and plant-environment interactions, as well as identify the most suitable plant mixtures for specific pedo-climatic conditions and potential breeding targets.

We seek a highly motivated postdoc to work with process-based models, to establish predictive understanding of ideal plant mixtures in agriculture for high and stable crop yields, efficient resource use, reduction of losses due to biotic and abiotic stresses, and provision of ecosystem service. This position will be associated with the project “DIVERSify – Designing InnoVative plant teams for Ecosystem Resilience and agricultural Sustainability“, funded within the EU Horizon 2020 framework (

The postdoc will be based at the Department of Crop Production Ecology in Uppsala. The research conducted within the Department generally aims at improving crop productivity and sustainability. The Department is part of the Ecology Center, which offers a stimulating research environment. The location in Uppsala facilitates further collaborations with researchers at Uppsala University, Stockholm University and KTH.


The project will focus on developing, evaluating, and applying mathematical and stochastic methods for the assessment of plant-plant and plant-environment interactions, in arable systems and grasslands. The work will include the use of existing crop models and the development of novel process-based mathematical models, as well as analyses of eco-physiological, environmental and climatic (e.g. time series analyses and meta-analyses).


Applicants shall hold a PhD in ecology, earth and environmental sciences, agronomy, biology, mathematics, or related fields. Applicants shall also have research experience and interest in eco-hydrological or crop models (coupling plants, ecosystems, and environmental conditions). Previous experience with crop models like APSIM and Daisy is a merit. The applicant should have a demonstrated ability to independently initiate, conduct, and complete research projects and to generate and publish the findings in international peer-reviewed journals. The candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills in English, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional meetings. A working knowledge of MatLab, R, or other computational environments is a merit.

GALA 2017. 3ª Conferencia de Gases de Efecto Invernadero en Sistemas Agropecuarios en Latinoamérica (4-6 octubre)

“Estimados colegas, estudiantes y amigos:

En INIA nos hemos planteado con mucho entusiasmo y energía la organización de la 3ª Conferencia de Gases de Efecto Invernadero en Sistemas Agropecuarios de Latinoamérica (GALA 2017).


La sociedad en su conjunto es consciente y manifiesta su preocupación por los efectos del calentamiento global del planeta causado por las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI). En el histórico “Acuerdo Climático de París”, celebrado en diciembre de 2015, 194 países acordaron presentar periódicamente sus compromisos de reducción de emisiones y sus planes de adaptación al cambio climático, y muchos de ellos también se comprometieron a lograr la neutralidad de sus emisiones para la segunda mitad de este siglo. Estos compromisos asumidos imponen fuertes desafíos para Latinoamérica y refuerzan la necesidad de lograr una intensificación sostenible de nuestros sistemas de producción agropecuaria para colaborar en satisfacer las necesidades nutricionales de próximas generaciones.

La realización de GALA 2017 nos permitirá compartir una vez más los avances científicos, los  conocimientos y las experiencias con nuestros colegas y amigos de Latinoamérica y del mundo, fortaleciendo los esfuerzos de nuestros países en la aplicación de alternativas de adaptación al cambio climático en los sistemas agropecuarios así como en la mitigación de sus emisiones.

Apostamos también -por sobre todas las cosas- a la participación activa de todos los jóvenes profesionales de las diferentes disciplinas involucradas en la temática GEI. Existirá la oportunidad de participar de un curso sobre “Procesamiento, Análisis y Publicación de Datos de Emisiones GEI”, durante el cual todos aprenderemos mucho y sin dudas será muy beneficioso para los jóvenes profesionales y técnicos en formación.
